Engineering Collaboratory Now Open in 1003C EB2

I’m happy to announce that the EB2 Collaboratory is now available for all Engineering students.

Modeled after the Office of Information Technology’s Flyspace project and the Learning Commons Group Study Areas in D.H. Hill Library, Engineering Collaboratories are specially configured rooms or areas of EOS labs where students and faculty can meet to work on projects together. Designed with technology to support collaborative work and interaction, these learning spaces typically have one or two EOS workstations connected to a 42-inch plasma monitor, with network connections for individual laptops.

The Collaboratory in 1003C EB2 is installed with the following equipment:

*Two Eos workstations with monitors - Linux and Windows *42-inch Plasma TV monitor *Wall-mounted, touch-control Menu Panel *Whiteboard *Table and chairs *Laptop connections *Wireless mouse and keyboard

For more on Engineering Collaboratories, visit the web site at http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/collabs/. The room will be open for walk-in usage starting in Spring (reservations will take priority), but for now the EOS Operator in 1203A EB2 will open the door for anyone who makes a reservation this semester.

Reservations may be made here: http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/collabs/reserve/

Office 2003 Service Pack 3

Microsoft has released Service Pack 3 for Office 2003 suite. Specifically:

*Office 2003
*OneNote 2003
*Visio 2003
*Project 2003

See http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E25B7049-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en for details.

Service Pack 3 includes stability improvements developed as a result of user input from the Microsoft Online Crash Analysis in Office 2003 and from Microsoft Product Support feedback.

Normally, we’d only release “reboot required” patches on Patch Tuesday, but that’s another three weeks away. My intention is to release these patches Monday morning — any computer using the ECE/WolfTech patch server will be affected; this includes all domained Windows machines and any personal machines that you may have pointed at our patch server.

These updates will result in a reboot. Any user wishing to avoid the automatic reboot must manually install the updates and reboot their computer before the scheduled installation. Only computers that have not already installed the updates and rebooted will reboot.

The reboots will occur tomorrow, according the following schedule:

Teaching Lab Computers: 11:00 PM

Research Computers: 3:00 PM

Faculty Computers: 4:00 PM

Staff Computers: 8:00 PM

For instructions on how to manually install the updates, see:

http://www.wolftech.ncsu.edu/support/support/Active_Directory/Documentation/Manually_Install_Updates

All personal computers that have been issued an IP address on the NCSU network must install these updates manually, or can be configured to automatically receive updates from ECE’s WindowsUpdate server. For instructions on configuring your personal computer to use our update server, see:

Wireless in EB2

State of EB2 — Week 108: Hey, this email is only 2 years and 1 month late… That’s pretty good for NC State.

The ComTech Nomadic Public Wireless deployment in EB2 has been *completed and certified*.

The entire building has been covered with 802.11g with the exception of some storage/mechanical areas in the basement.

Outdoor coverage has also been provided in the courtyard areas all around the building.

ComTech has added 802.11a radios to most of these access points as well. We will have 802.11a radios in *all* access points as soon as the last are received. Most of the access points missing these radios are located on the East side of the building and are expected to be in place in the next 3-4 weeks.

What is A/B/G?

802.11 is the IEEE standard for wireless, with A, B, G, and N all serving as the most well known versions.

802.11b radios transmit at 2.4 GHz and send data up to 11 Mbps. The “B” format is what you’ll find in MRC, and on most home wireless setups older that are 2-3yrs old.

802.11g radios transmit at 2.4 Ghz and send data up to 54 Mbps. The “G” format is backwards compatible with “B” — so older wireless cards won’t have a problem using it. Most home wireless setups in the past 2yrs have been based on this standard — as has all of EB2.

802.11a radios transmit at 5 GHz and send data up to 54 Mbps. Traditionally, the “A” format is used for bandwidth hungry applications as while it has the same speed as “G”, you can place more “A” radios in one area without interfering with each other (or “G” as that’s on a different spectrum). The range, due to the higher spectrum, is much lower, typically around 60 feet — plus it has a harder time passing through walls. The classrooms have had this in place in EB2 since we first moved in. I suspect any gains in using “A” over “G” will simply stem from the fact that less people have wireless cards that use “A” and so you’re simply sharing the bandwidth with less people. Over time, it will become less of an advantage.

Due to the differences between 802.11a and 802.11b/g transmission characteristics (basically how far they can transmit), access to 802.11a is not guaranteed in all areas. If you’re within 50 feet of an AP, you’re got a good shot at seeing it.

All non-ComTech “private wireless access points and systems” should be deactivated with the exception of those previously agreed upon by ECE/CSC and ComTech. Please see the following URL for information related to wireless network systems:

Oracle Calendar Outage - October 9th

On Tuesday, October 9, 2007, ITD will be upgrading our current Oracle calendar service in order to provide you with more flexibility, better service, and future opportunities with the Oracle Collaboration Suite. The Oracle calendar service will be unavailable for approximately 5 days starting on Tuesday, October 9 at 6 p.m. to perform a major upgrade to version 10g. The calendar service is expected to be restored by 8 a.m. on Monday, October 15 (fall break for students is 10/11 - 14). This major upgrade will require action by end-users and resource owners, including password changes and software client reconfiguration.

This upgrade will necessitate:

*Installing a new calendar server

*Migrating some of your most recent calendar entries (last 30 days) and all of your future entries to the new server

*Suspending all Oracle service for approximately 5 days, from 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 9, until 8:00 a.m., Monday, October 15

*Below are short lists of what you will need to do both before and after this upgrade. For more details, see the Oracle migration page (http://brickyard.ncsu.edu/migration/).

==BEFORE the system goes down on Tuesday, October 9==

*Be sure to save a copy of your calendar entries for the few days when your calendar will be inaccessible (October 9-15). For example, you could print them out, sync with your PDA, or make an offline agenda. Otherwise, you will not be able to access these entries until after the upgrade is complete.

*If you wish, also save copies of any other past and future entries that you think you may need before the system is restored. All of your entries for September 9, 2007 and later will be migrated to the new server. Archiving instructions are on the migration page (http://brickyard.ncsu.edu/migration/).

==AFTER the system comes back up on Monday, October 15==

*Reset your Oracle calendar password. After the upgrade, your old one will no longer be valid, and a new one will be sent to you by email. You may change this to one that you prefer (or you may continue to use this new one).

*WolfTech IT will take this downtime as a good opportunity to upgrade everyone to the newest version of the calendar client. You’ll not notice many changes though.

—–

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that the outage required by this upgrade may cause. If you have any questions about the upgrade or about the information on the migration page, please don’t hesitate to contact the NC State Help Desk at help@ncsu.edu or 515-4357.

Thank you for your patience!

Sincerely,

ITD Oracle Brickyard Calendar Team
